AI2ES Contributes to WMO’s United in Science 2024 Report

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its United in Science 2024 Report. AI2ES Director and PI Amy McGovern is one of the many leaders and trailblazing pioneers who participated in drafting the report.

In particular, our director contributed to chapter 2 “Artificial intelligence and machine learning: revolutionizing weather forecasting.” The report goes into detail about how AI/ML makes weather forecasting cheaper, faster, and more accurate. In addition, the report highlights the importance of the ethical development of these models in order promote model transparency and ensure equal access of reliable predictions for hazard avoidance.

This is one of the many examples of how AI2ES leadership and research are shaping the field of AI/ML for weather forecasting and reiterating the need for ethical and trustworthy AI in the fields of weather, climatology, and risk mitigation.
